In severe cases of periodontal disease, when there is no option to save the tooth, your periodontist will extract the infected tooth and prepare the site for future placement of a dental implant.

Tooth Extraction |
|
Before the tooth extraction process begins your periodontist will need to anesthetize (numb) the tooth and the surounding area.
Ridge Augmentation
Over a long period of time, tooth loss without necessary replacement (such as dental implants), will cause the jaw bone to resorb. It is crucial to immediately replace any missing teeth if possible for this reason. A Ridge Augmentation is when a bone graft is used to increase the bony ridge height and or width of a jaw bone that has resorbed. A bone graft can also be used immediately after tooth extraction to prevent bone restoration. The graft needs a healing period of 4-6 months before the area will be ready for an implant. Before an implant is placed, a certain bone quality is required to be successful.
