90% of patients who have sleep apnea are not aware of having it! Sleep apnea is an interruption of breathing while asleep. It is a misleading sleep disorder. A person may have numerous occurrences of choking or gasping for air throughout the night but most people don't remember struggling for breath.
Generally it is the partner who initially notices that the patient is struggling to breathe. If a person does not get treatment for this condition, this common disorder can be life-threatening.
Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea are:
•Frequent breaks in breathing (apnea)
•Choking / gasping for air
•Loud snoring
•Unexpected awakenings to resume breathing
•Waking up in a sweat
•Daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at improper times
